Diesel Generators: Power Where It’s Needed

August 11, 2009 · Filed Under Business

Diesel Generators A diesel generator is a combination of electric generator, often called an alternator, with a diesel engine used to supply electric energy. Diesel generators are used to supply power in many applications ranging from emergency power supply to full-time electric power needs and are are often found in places where an emergency power supply is needed such as hospitals, office buildings, and factories.

Generators can be set up and used for full-time electric power needs where no connection to the grid exists, such as on a construction site or a remote location. Diesel generators can also be used in place of standard electric power to eliminate the need for a connection to the grid. Often, a diesel generator is used to aid standard power systems in times of peak use as well. Diesel generators can also be useful for powering vehicles, for example motor homes. In times of power outages, diesel generators are often set up and used to supply power to essential operations such as a hospital, office building, or factory.

Used generators are often utilised for emergency electric supply as well. These generators are great for occasional use and will provide power when there is no other power source available. A used generator will often last for many years if properly installed and maintained, providing electric power for the duration of any power outage. Should the power go out for any reason, a generator will run to supply the power for necessary functions, such as lights, until the regular power source is restored and fully operational again.

Generators are based on size and ratings, and different diesel generators are useful for different applications. For example, a generator with a standby rating is typically used for emergency power supply. A generator with a prime rating is best suited for applications where it is the only power source, such as a construction site or festival. A generator with a base load rating is best used in applications where a continuous unvarying load is required, or when it will be run in parallel with other generators or power sources. Generators with a base load rating are often run continuously at maximum power output levels. Quite often, generators are given all three ratings but may be found with only standby or prime ratings.

When properly installed and maintained, a diesel generator will provide power when and where it’s needed for many years.  Diesel generators can be used for either emergency power supply or for a continuous power supply. Knowing the expected application, size and type of load, and any motors the generator is expected to start, will make sure the diesel generator provides reliable power where it’s needed.
